Privacy Policy

How Utility Explained collects, uses, and protects data, including advertising and analytics cookies and your choices.

Privacy Policy

This policy explains what data Utility Explained (“we”, “us”) collects when you visit utilityexplained.com, how it is used, and the choices you have. We do not require user accounts and we do not sell your personal information.

Effective date: August 12, 2026

When you first visit, you will see a cookie consent banner. Until you choose, advertising and analytics cookies are not set — we use Google Consent Mode v2 to hold them back by default. You can Accept all (enabling personalized ads and analytics) or Decline (we then serve only limited, non-personalized ads and do not enable analytics storage). Your choice is remembered on this device. You can revisit the banner by clearing your browser storage for this site.

Information you give us

If you contact us through our contact form or email, we receive the information you submit (such as your name and email address). We use it only to respond to your message or improve our content, and we do not share it with third parties for marketing.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

We display ads served by Google AdSense, including ads from Google and its verified advertising partners (such as DoubleClick/Google’s ad infrastructure). AdSense may use cookies (including the __gads / IDE cookie and similar) and device identifiers to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.

  • If you accept advertising cookies, ads may be personalized based on your interests.
  • If you decline, Google serves limited (non-personalized) ads instead — these are still served but are not based on your browsing behavior.
  • Manage or opt out of personalized advertising at any time via Google Ads Settings, the Digital Advertising Alliance, or your browser’s cookie controls. Learn more at Google’s advertising privacy page.

Some ads may use cookies that remain on your device. Most browsers let you refuse or delete cookies in their settings; doing so will not prevent you from reading our content.

Analytics

We measure traffic with two tools:

  • Google Analytics 4 (property G-SGVWNS876W). When analytics storage is enabled (via your consent choice), Google sets cookies such as _ga to estimate sessions, page views, and engagement in aggregate. We use this to see which guides are useful. Learn more in Google’s analytics privacy information and the Google Analytics “opt-out” browser add-on.
  • Rybbit (privacy-first analytics). Rybbit is designed to work without traditional cross-site tracking cookies.

Analytics data is aggregated and used to improve the site; it is not used to identify you personally for advertising.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example, under the EU/UK GDPR or U.S. state laws like the CCPA/CPRA), you may have rights to know what data is held about you, to request deletion, and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal data — we do not sell personal information, and you can decline advertising/analytics cookies at any time. To exercise a right, contact us.

Children’s privacy

Our content is intended for adults managing household bills. We do not knowingly collect information from children, and we do not direct advertising at them.

Our guides may link to external sites (such as government and utility websites). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with a new effective date.

How we got these numbers

Cost ranges reflect typical U.S. utility bills and are labeled as estimates, not guarantees. Rates, climates, and providers vary by region. Read our methodology to see how we calculate and review these figures.
